The Art of Intuition in Tech Leadership
In the fast-evolving world of technology, intuition often separates good leaders from great ones. The ability to feel the architecture, distinguish between theory and practical best practices, and, perhaps most critically, knowing what not to do is invaluable. Experience sharpens this instinct, but it requires introspection. While excitement fuels innovation, true breakthroughs come when leaders spend more time thinking deeply and executing with precision.
Leading Through Tough Tech Times
Turbulence is inevitable in technology. Systems fail, markets shift, and unexpected challenges arise. The best leaders don’t panic, they break problems into smaller, solvable parts. Of course, learning not to panic comes from experience. Learning to let intuition become a guiding force, allowing leaders to act swiftly while ensuring minimal impact on both the tech stack and the business. Wearing both hats; technology and business- is crucial. It’s not just about fixing problems but learning from them. Strong post-mortem analysis, coupled with robust follow-up practices, transforms failures into lessons that refine decision-making.
When Data Fails You
Data is a powerful tool, but it has its limits. When building something that has never existed before, data can often be discouraging. It only tells the story of what is, not what could be. For incremental improvements, data is invaluable. But for moonshot ideas, intuition must take the lead. There have been moments when data suggested something was impossible, yet intuition pushed forward, and those leaps have often led to groundbreaking innovation.
Balancing Data and Intuition in Decision-Making
Data sanity is critical, but over-reliance can lead to myopia. It’s like being a frog in a well, your worldview is only as big as the data you see. While data helps with well-researched problems, over-analysing can be a trap. Analysis paralysis has cost many leaders billion-dollar opportunities. The key is knowing when to trust intuition. Art and science must go hand in hand.
When Intuition Sparks Breakthroughs
Some of the biggest bets in tech were driven by intuition. Taking risks is, paradoxically, the safest move, because not taking them is the biggest risk of all. Intuition enables leaders to see not just delta changes but alpha transformations. When building Cassandra, the conventional wisdom was that SQL would never go away. The resistance was immense, but that resistance often signals something revolutionary.
Regrets from Ignoring Intuition
Every leader has had moments where ignoring intuition led to regret. The lesson? Every tough decision, every crisis, is a chance to strengthen that muscle. Reflection isn’t just about moving past challenges but learning from them deeply. Post-analysis turns experiences into a personal playbook for future decisions.
Avoiding Common Pitfalls in Data Interpretation
Many leaders fall into the trap of overanalysing data, missing out on paradigm-shifting opportunities. Friends have rejected companies that later became multi-billion-dollar giants because their analysis led them astray. Overthinking can hurt more than underthinking. The best leaders recognise that while frameworks help, there’s no substitute for hands-on experience. Much like timing in batting, intuition in tech leadership can’t be taught on paper, it must be practised endlessly.
Advice for Emerging Tech Leaders
Struggling with trusting intuition? The answer lies in balance. Learn from every situation, not just overcome them. Too often, leaders breathe a sigh of relief once a problem is solved without digging into why it happened. Post-analysis is crucial. Every challenge is a training ground for your intuition. Over time, this practice builds the mental strength required to make high-stakes decisions with confidence.
A Note to my Younger Self
Patience is everything. Problems often appear far bigger in our heads than they are in reality. With time, most things sort themselves out. A calmer mind makes better decisions. Less stress, more clarity.
Intuition isn’t magic. It’s the byproduct of experience, reflection, and a willingness to take calculated risks. The leaders who master it aren’t just reacting to the future. They are busy creating it.

Boost Your Productivity with Git Worktrees
Git worktrees allow you to check out multiple branches at the same time within separate directories, all linked to the same repository. Each worktree acts as an independent working directory.
